Cathedral rock in Sedona is one of these popular red rock formations that every tourist wants to experience with naked eyes.
Sedona red rocks are age old formations as a result of some natural processes. Actually, the present Sedona used to be a delta some 320 million years ago. A river used to flow across the delta which deposited lots of sediments there. Gradually as the Colorado Plateau got elevated, the structure of the delta also rose above the sea level. The sediments in the delta transformed into huge formations. River still used to flow across the area which kept eroding these rocky formations, thus, giving unique shape to ach formation. The red color of the rocks is due to the iron laded river water that flows across the area.
Although the whole area has big rock structures, some spots have been identified as unique formations - Cathedral rock, Bell rock, Coffee Pot rock, Thunderstorm rock and a few more.
Cathedral Rock in Sedona offers an awe-inspiring sight. It is a magnificent structure that symbolizes inner peace for some and epitome of beauty for others. Cathedral rock is also an important vortex center which symbolizes energy that helps in connecting human beings with the surreal. After reaching on the top of the Cathedral rock, people meditating there have experienced inner bliss that connects them with the surreal and enables them to know realities beyond earth. The spiral rocky structures stand 1000 vertical feet above the road below and a part of it look like tall human fingers.
You need to hike a bit in order to reach the top most of the Cathedral rock. The hike is moderate to difficult depending on the trail that you select. Some parts of the trail have stair like structures. The hike will be moderate if you choose to climb the stair like structure. The hike from Back O' Beyond trail is relatively easy.
Our tip is that it's better to start hiking during early morning, especially, if you are visiting in summer. And while you're coming down try and do this in daylight because it is difficult to see the markers after its dark. Carry enough water and light snacks to munch while you take rest during hiking.
It can be a challenging hike but worthy enough when you reach at the top. It's amazing to see the greenery of the pines under the blue sky after you reach at the top of the Cathedral red rock. For an unforgettable experience, reach the Cathedral top during the sunrise or sunset. The rays of the sun change the color of the rock to golden red, making it even more beautiful.
Cathedral Rock in Sedona is worth seeing as it is a great example of the power and beauty of nature. Your Grand Canyon tour is incomplete without a visit to Sedona Red Rocks.
